The Spirit of the Cali-R
by John Bigwood

John BigwoodAmongst the Northern Soul fraternity there is a saying - “If you have to ask you won't understand”. This can be applied to the Cali-r.

Every weekend up and down this country, thousands of people of all ages attend Soul Nights, Weekenders and All-nighters with one thing in common - a love of Soul Music in its many forms (and music is an art form).

60s, 70s, 80s, RnB music, most of which originated from America, music produced in the main by young black artists in small studios, often for little reward, many with no contracts is more popular today than when first released.

Popular with who? Old, young, it is classless. For those who attended the old Cali you must remember hearing for the first time those amazing songs, many by groups who disappeared into obscurity leaving behind a legacy which has stood the test of time.

At the time some people just danced around their handbags (nothing wrong with that). Others developed a passion for the sound. It is still the same today. Some come to hear familiar tunes, revive old memories and have an enjoyable evening. To many it is much more - a passion for the different styles of music, Motown, Atlantic, Stax, Northern, Modern, Philly, Funk etc, the history behind the sounds, the myths and legends, the record collectors often paying hundreds of pounds for rare 7” singles, and yes the dancing. But forget the word "Disco".

As with the study and appreciation of classical music some of which involves dancing ie Ballet, some people just like the popular pieces whilst for others it is a lifestyle. Art has many forms, one person's ideas may differ, but then isn’t that the whole point. Art often mimics life.

Many people do not realise that Cali-r is such a very important facet in the field of Soul Music. The style of music played is unique to the venue as it reflects that played over the years at the old California Ballroom, itself a legendry venue. It is a genre all on its own. If lost, the impact to the history and appreciation of the music would be massive.

Most people in Dunstable do not realise how historically important musically the California Ballroom was. To be a part was something special.

The council rather than ignore it should embrace Cali-r as part of the history of Dunstable.

Music is an art form, to exclude certain styles could be considered to be discriminating. The venue was built with rate payers money for performing arts, etc. Let the people of Dunstable decide how they wish to be educated and entertained at the same time.

Keep The Faith.
